BENEFITS
Internships provide organizations with
high quality business students who are nearing the completion
of their academic careers, who have advanced training in their
majors, and who are willing to exchange their effort for “real
world” experience and the opportunity to practice what they
have learned in the classroom.
EMPLOYER'S ROLE
Employers are expected to engage student
interns in career-related work experiences that are sufficiently
supervised and evaluated so that students can maximize the
development of skills and learning that ties together their
academic experiences with real world experience.
Internship credit will not be considered for work experience
that fulfills general responsibilities common to all business
disciplines (e.g., data entry, filing, answering telephone
calls). The Chair of the department issuing credit will determine
the credit-worthiness of an internship opportunity.
Employers are expected to maintain
Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Affirmative Action
standards in the recruitment and hiring processes. Including:
a. Recruiting, interviewing, and hiring
individuals without regard to race, color, religion, national
origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability and
providing reasonable accommodations upon request;
b. Avoiding the use of inquiries that
are considered unacceptable by EEO standards during the recruitment
process;
c. Maintaining the confidentiality
of student information, regardless of the source, including
personal knowledge, written records, reports, and computer
databases*.
*Adapted from the National Association
of Colleges and Employers, Principles for Professional Conduct
Employers should understand and respect
the academic calendar whereby during midterm and final exam
weeks, the student interns may have to temporarily reduce
their work hours for intensive studying.
Employers who are looking for alternative
ways to compensate students instead of an hourly wage should
consider establishing a tax-deductible scholarship in the
name of the organization. The proceeds of a scholarship can
be used to offset a portion of the intern's tuition, fees
and books. Contact the Internship Director, Dr. Robert Epstein
at 405.974.2495 for more details.
