An internship can be initiated in the
following ways:
1) Check out the list of current offerings.
If you are interested in one, check with the department chair
in that major to see if you qualify. An internship requires
a Faculty Supervisor in the major; the department chair might
recommend one with whom you should meet.
2) Contact the College Internship
Director, Dr.
Robert Epstein, who will attempt to make a match by searching
the database of existing students and internship opportunities
or by contacting students and businesses. The Internship Director
will also contact the Department Chair of the student’s major
to arrange for a Faculty Supervisor, unless the student has
already made arrangements with a Faculty member.
3) Find an employer who would be willing
to sponsor an internship. An internship requires that a job
description be provided for a job that has academic value.
The job description should include qualifications required,
duties, pay, and hours. Also required is the name, position,
and qualifications of the Internship Sponsor Supervisor. Provide
these to the College Internship Director,
Dr. Robert Epstein, who will confirm the information and
confer with the appropriate College of Business Administration
department chair. If acceptable, then a Faculty Supervisor
will need to be identified.
Then,
You and the Faculty Supervisor need
to propose a program of study to accompany the internship.
This needs to include a paper, project, or some other
documented evidence of academic work. Bring the partially completed Internship Agreement Form and
Irregular
Enrollment Forms (Forms
Page) to the College Internship Director, Dr.
Robert Epstein. Dr. Epstein or the faculty supervisor
will then call the Internship Sponsor Supervisor to set up
an interview if one is required.
Once an understanding on terms is reached
among all parties (the Intern, the Faculty Supervisor, and
the Sponsor Supervisor), the Internship Agreement form is
completed and all required signatures are obtained for approval.
(The Internship Agreement form can be downloaded from the
Forms Page at this site.)
When the Internship Agreement has all
the required signatures, the Intern may enroll using the Request
for Irregular Enrollment form. The term of the internship shall be
dictated by the beginning and ending dates of the semester
in the official class schedule.
Upon completion of the internship,
the intern must submit all the required reports and presentations
to the Faculty Supervisor that are specified in the Internship
Agreement.
The Sponsor Supervisor should
complete the Internship Report & Evaluation form and submit
it to the Faculty Supervisor. (This form can be downloaded
from the Forms Page.)
Only after completion of all the above
steps may a grade be reported to the Registrar.
Exceptions to this requirement can be made by the Internship
Director. A complete
file will then be maintained by the Internship Director, including
copies of the completed Internship Agreement, the completed
Request for Irregular Enrollment form, the Sponsor
Supervisor's Internship Report &
Evaluation, and a copy of the student's work submitted to
the Faculty. This file will be used to maintain
and evaluate the Internship Program for continuous
improvement. Sponsors and
faculty who repeatedly neglect completing all requirements
will become ineligible to participate.
International Student Enrollment
International students must secure
appropriate signatures on Curricular Practical Training Program
form [“CPT”] from Department Chair and submit CPT to the UCO
International Student Services [“ISS”] for the required signature
on Internship Agreement form.
